If you have a recipe that calls for softened butter, and you’re all ready to add it but forgot to take the butter out of the fridge to soften, you don’t have to sit around and wait for it, or heaven forbid put it in the microwave: instead, just put the butter in a zipper bag, grab a rolling pin or other firm object, and take out some aggression on it. It’ll soften up in no time.
You can see this tip (courtesy of the folks at America’s Test Kitchen) in action in the video above, but it’s important to note that this gets you softened butter, not room-temperature butter, so if your recipe calls for warm or room temperature butter, you’re still out of luck. If it’s just softness that’s required, like for mixing or baking, this may save you some time.
